The second largest city in the one-and-only state of Texas, Houston boasts a diverse population covering many ethnic and religious backgrounds as well as a frequenting holidaymaker population from around the world. It’s no surprise, then, that Houston’s downtown area hosts arguably Texas’ most vibrant collection of small businesses, heritage shops, as well as arts and cultural exhibitions. What’s perhaps most unique about this city’s downtown area is its distinctly separated sections. The Skyline District, for instance, includes some of the city’s most breathtaking skyscrapers, while the Historic District features Market Square and one-of-a-kind architecture dating back to the 19th century. Along with the Sports and Conventions District, the Theatre District, and the Museum District, downtown Houston draws thousands of visitors year after year with fine eateries, action-packed bars, and unique arts venues.

  • Explore downtown Houston’s underground labyrinths, where some of the area’s best lunchtime eateries serve food to the city’s hardest workers.
  • Attend free outdoor performances at the Miller Outdoor Theatre, or visit the area during the day for family picnicking.
  • Visit the Houston Museum District to explore some of the city’s groundbreaking museums, such as the Museum of Fine Arts and Natural Science, as well as the Children and Holocaust Museum.

Houston is conveniently located near three different international airports, and the most famous form of transit within the city is via private car. Despite Houston’s well-connected freeway hub, however, the area’s traffic often becomes prohibitively congested. As such, the area’s famously efficient public transportation options, such as buses, light rails, and lift vans, provide a helpful alternative to highly congested streets. Houston also boasts some 160 miles of bike trails, many of which go through downtown areas for those holidaymakers who enjoy exercising.

What travelers to Downtown are saying

Some cool bars downtown but not much else going on. Felt like the most multicultural area in Texas, which was great. People friendly as always.
