Christmas Escape

Staff was friendly and welcoming. Room was clean and new products daily. No construction that I saw but others have reported. Everything appeared newer. The front desk even took time to look up restaurants that would deliver late at night.

undergoing refurbishment but well worth visiting

The hotel is undergoing refurbishment at the moment. It is not fair to judge what is/not available. Still, I enjoyed my visit. I stayed in one of the refurbished rooms, which was very nice. I recommend it to those who do not plan to stay to much in the room. There is no opening curtains or windows while refurbishment is going on.

We loved it!

This was our first stay in New York and we had heard so many stories about cockroaches, mean people and tiny expensive rooms. The Gershwin had none of these issues. Every staff person we met was above and beyond helpful! Not only did they recommend good places to eat and the best way to get places, one of the guys walked us to a subway entrance carrying a piece of our luggage without us even asking him to. The location is excellent and walking distance to so many places. If something's not in walking distance, there are plenty of subway entrances nearby. The room itself was old but renovated so it had a ton of charm but still felt very clean. Also, it was much larger even than most hotel rooms in modern California hotels and the bed was so comfortable! I'm sure it doesn't compare to some of the $300/night high end hotels that we can't afford, but we definitely loved it. We totally got our money's worth and will be back the next time we visit New York. :)

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Use the subway! As someone not from New York, we were told it was complicated and scary. It was actually wonderful and saved us a ton of money. It was very easy to figure out and will get you anywhere in Manhattan.

Very impressed!

After reading mixed reviews about this hotel I was a bit concerned but due to the prices of other hotels in New York decided to bite the bullet and book the Gershwin. I could not be more happier with this decision. The staff were so helpful and friendly. The coffee shop downstairs became our daily stop was delicious. The room was very clean, old but clean. The beds were comfortable. The bathroom is small but clean and the towels were so luxurious. Stayed 7 nights and the location is perfect. So close to Macys and subway stations. Cant wait to go back.
