Avoid at all costs

I've worked in the hospitality industry in both the U.S. and Ireland for over a decade and this is hands down the most awful experience I've ever had in my life. Terrible from start to finish. My girlfriend and I took a trip to NYC with her parents and her sister. The three of them had a large room and my girlfriend and I booked a double room. On arrival at 3pm we were handed a key and told to go to room 414. When we got there I knocked the door and found other guests where already in the room. So we made our way back down to reception, queued up again for another 10 mins or so and the lady that had helped us originally called me over. I explained that there was still guests in the room, so she picked up the phone and started telling the guests they should have left. Hangs up the phone and gives me a new key and says, This room. Hopefully it is better. We head back up to the 8th floor with all our luggage and walk to the end of the corridor to our room. The room has the door lying open and the place is trashed. Towels on the floor, no bed linen. Rubbish lying here and there. Clearly hadn't been cleaned. So we got our luggage and headed back down to reception and joined the queue again. A different person was working this time, a man in a black blazer and slicked back hair, so I explained what had been happening. He just looked at me, rolled his eyes and handed me a key and said Try this one. No apologies, he didn't seem to care at all. So we went up to room 1012, which by this stage we were absolutely dreading what we would find. This room had been cleaned. As you'll see in the pictures the place is disgusting. After being in the room for half an hour we decided to go down again and ask about being moved to a better room. We didn't mind paying a little more. We got down to reception and queued before being called over by a woman. We explained our story and asked what other options would be available to us and she said Nothing, would you like to check out? I was blown away by how little she cared. Our only options where to like it or leave. We'd prepaid through a travel broker and would lose all our money of we left so we went back up to our room and braved the dirt. The carpets were badly stained with God knows how many different bodily fluids, the window looked like it hadn't been cleaned in years. The bathroom is outright disgusting. There was caked on dirt around the lightswitch, taps, door, just about anywhere you can imagine. Then there was the bed. Something just didn't feel right about the bed. My girlfriend kept complaining about itches when we where in it. I said it was nothing but felt it too. The next morning she was covered in bites. Big red lumps all down her arms. I felt a bite on my ear. We stayed another few nights braving the horrible conditions and when checking out my girlfriends father told us that on the second morning he had woken up after he felt something running down his leg. He pulled the blanket away and found a huge cockroach in the bed. Been home for a day now and had to see a nurse about the bite on my ear. It had become infected and had swollen to about the size of a jellybean. It as agony on the 7hr flight home. Avoid this hotel at all costs.

Solo trip to NYC

The hotel was recommended by a friend as it is in a central location of Manhattan, and it is located in a great spot of Midtown. The hotel is located literally around the corner from the iconic Empire State Building, and is always an amazing view walking back to the hotel whether it be by day or night. Transport is very accessible. Penn station is only a few minutes from the hotel, airport shuttles stop at the corner of the hotel, taxis are always lined up at the front, and bus tours are located around the corner of the hotel. The look of the hotel itself is a bit old but the hotel is comfortable and accommodating. Although, it would have been good to be able to have access to heat while being there but I was advised that the central heating was turned off as it was spring. Staff were more than happy to bring blankets to my room though. I would recommend staying at the hotel as per the comments above. The only downer to the whole experience was that it does take a long time to check in at the hotel as it is rather busy. Expect the line to take at least 30 mins. On the day of my arrival it took an hour to check in, so arriving slightly early to your check in time might be the way to go.
