What travelers to Portland are saying
One of the most underappreciated small cities in America, Portland, Maine is the biggest urban area in what amounts to an underrated state, in many regards. Maine is popular with visitors in the summer of course, but towns like Portland often get ignored in favor of bed and breakfasts up and down the Atlantic Coast, in places like Ogunquit and Kennebunkport. The city with a population of 65,000 and close to 500,000 people in the metropolitan area is a terrific destination however. With a laid-back, casual vibe, Portland is a joy to explore. The Portland Head Light Station in nearby Cape Elizabeth is a popular attraction, drawing more than one million tourists on average every year. The lighthouse was built at the behest of George Washington and was first lit in 1791. More recent and hip attractions in the city itself include the superb Portland Museum of Art, Victoria Mansion and the Portland Observatory. The myriad cafés, restaurants and boutiques that line historic Exchange Street are definitely worth a tour as well.
Portland has a cross between a maritime and humid continental climate, with four distinct seasons.
- Winter (December to February) -11-2°C
- Spring (March to May) -4-17°C
- Summer (June to September) 10-26°C
- Fall (October to November) -1-14°C
