Worst hotel ever

In Chicago for work for 5 nights and it was one of the most frustrating hotel experiences ever. To start there is an annoying odor of aged, old, which means slightly moldy, all around. Beds are cheap, uncomfortable, and you can hear what happens in rooms and and hallways around you, especially drunk people, and there seem to be a lot in this hotel. The front desk as well as the concierge desk staff was efficient but borderline rude. I got to my room and the safe was locked, I guess by the previous guest. I called the front desk and security, three times in the course of my first day. Every time they said someone could come within 30 minutes to fix it. never happened, I gave up and took my valuables with me every day. The bathroom was the case of the disappearing towels. Fully stocked the first day, there were less and less every day as they took the used towels (even if I did not put them on the floor). Last day I arrived after my workday to find no towels in the bathroom. But that was all they had done, take all the remaining towels. No cleaning, bed was not made, trash cans were not empty... It took four phone calls and 1 1/2 hours to have someone to bring a shower tower so I could change and get late to my work dinner. My boss arrived a day after me. After he checked in he got to the room but the keys did not work. Tried a couple times, unsuccessfully, then someone from cleaning staff passed by, looked at his documents and let him into... an occupied room. He had to go back and spend an additional 20 minutes at the front desk to have a room reassigned. Both the security and the cleaning reps that I interacted with were polite and extremely apologetic, and did the best they could to break the system and help me but they seemed to be as powerless as me to get anything done. They did not get anywhere, neither did we. Believe I am no snob, once I was overnight in a motor home on a Walmart parking, and that was fun. This hotel, never again.

Family Holiday

This hotel is a bit spooky. It was a long walk through some dingy corridors to get to our room - reminded me of the hotel in The Shining as we didn't seem to pass many people in the corridors and if we did we weren't sure if we were safe or not. Our room was at least twice as big as the other peoples rooms we were travelling with so there was no problem with space at all. Location was fantastic and all amenities you require are within the hotel. Check in staff could use a lesson in customer service though.

Last minute booking worked out fine

I wasn't able to book early as the trip came up last minute. Chicago was pretty much booked solid. I was pleased to find the Congress Plaza or such short notice. Hotel is an old facility that has had some modernization. The lobby, restaurants, front desk are updated. My room was very dated yet had some of the modern conveniences like Flat screen HD TV, good comfortable beds. Hotel was quiet and the staff was very attentive. The location worked out very well as it is right on Michigan Avenue

Great first experience

First time to Chicago, the Congress made it enjoyable. Location was ideal close to the lake, minutes to downtown. Staff was courteous. No refrigerator, or microwave in the rooms, so I gave it a 3 for amenities.

Great view

Located at lakefront and a great view from window. Cost performance was perfect regardless during a big conference at McCormic Place. Thank you.

A bad experience, lots of trouble

The first night our room had no heat (45 degrees in Chicago that day) and no hot water when we woke up. We complained, asked for a call from the manager which we never received. We did get moved to a new room the second night, after which we encountered no electricity in the bathroom outlet (had to call to get that fixed) followed by the toilet going on the fritz the next day, had to call about that too. Upon checking out and asking for full credit for the first day, we were told we could get "only $50 credit since you booked with a third party". My husband talked the manager into $27 additional credit, so we got $77 removed from a night's charge. We will not stay at that hotel again, and because we had little bargaining power with them, we will also not be booking with you again.

needs refurbishing

Electrical outlets few and far between and look as if they date to the 1970s. My friend's room didn't have hot water. Furniture looks as if it's time to go to Salvation Army. And don't bother to hang that thing on your door for breakfast: they don't pay any attention.

Great location, but everything else lacking.

Our room was very old (South Tower). The view of Lake Michigan was spectacular though. The staff answer your questions in a curt manner, bordering on rude. Customer service training could be much, much better. In general, everything was old and dirty in what was once a grand hotel. As another guest that I shared an elevator with commented, it seemed like it was haunted. Overall, the hotel made me sad - It had seen much better times.
