Dupont Circle Washington DC
Dupont Circle is situated in the Old City of Washington DC and was one of the first areas laid out by architect Pierre Charles L’Enfant, the famous designer of the city’s network of streets. Present day Dupont Circle is a traffic hub surrounded by an array of historical buildings, embassies, as well as trendy coffeehouses and bars. The area is famous for its rowhouses and palatial mansions, many of which were built in the late nineteenth century. After falling into disrepair right after World War II, the neighbourhood experienced a renaissance in the late 1970s and has now taken on a bohemian quality and has become home to the lobbyists and statesmen that make up the elite of Washington D.C.
- Stroll through the community garden of the House of the Temple, headquarters of the Freemasons and one of the architectural symbols of Washington DC
- Visit Washington DC in June and take part in Capital Pride, the annual LGBT festival that brings more than two hundred thousand revellers to Dupont Circle each year.
- Walk along Massachusetts Avenue’s Historic District will reveal great examples of Beaux Arts architecture .
Since Dupont Circle is a busy traffic circle found in the centre of the city, travellers in cars will almost certainly have to park on a side street and walk back. Dupont Circle is just a short taxi ride from the Reagan National Airport, and has its own stop on the Red Line of the D.C. Metro. Since Washington DC’s grid of streets is so easy to navigate, the easiest way to get around is by car or foot, the latter of which allows you to truly absorb the historical ambiance of the capital of the United States.
