Fulfilled my basic needs

I went to San Fran to visit a friend. He lives in the tenderloin and doesn't have a car. He recommended that we stay in the same area. For those who don't know, this area is a very rough part of town. It's dirty with lots of homeless people. I don't fault the hotel for the area, but the room was tiny with a really bad smell. After a day or two, it went away. I'm not sure if it actually did or we just got used to it. Also, the tv is at a weird angle, which made it hard for someone sitting further away to see it. We didn't take advantage of their brunch, but the free wifi (though slow) was nice. If I visit my friend again, I'd probably stay in this hotel again due to the convenient location to my friend's place.

Clean and well staffed

I was very happy with this hotel, especially considering what you get in San Francisco for your money. The decor is very dated but everything appears to be clean and well maintained. The room was much larger and the location as good or better than a hotel I stayed at a few days before for the same money. The continental breakfast was ok but not overwhelming. It's certainly not a resort but for me a hotel in the city is just a place to rest and relax before getting back out there. If that's what you're looking for, the Opal does the job. All the staff I met were professional and friendly. Considering the sketchy options available in San Francisco for those within a reasonable budget, I'll be staying here again rather than risking another nightmare hotel.

Charming old hotel

Nothing exceptional except that there was a complimentary breakfast for all hotel guests, simple, down to earth but good. So, good value - saves some bucks, no need to chase around for a café or diner in the morning. The location was a little bit 'off' - but for city walkers like us it was no problem. There are surprisingly many beggars and other destitute people in San Francisco, which is a bit of a surprise, but they are all over the place.

Short stay but comfortable

Would have been an excellent stay but I was dissapointed in the hotel not having a parking for their customers and the showers had no pressure at all. However, I did enjoyed staying in historical hotel.

Value for money

Clean rooom, atmosphere, and a generous breakfast buffe included. The location is ok, but there are a lot of homeless persons straying around in the area, but on the other hand, they are all over San Francisco. Also, I checked the hotel on the bedbug warning site, and it was one of the few that had no reported cases. Well worth the money!

Its location is convenient!

The location of this hotel was very convenient for a first-time visitor to San Francisco driving from the airport to the hotel like me as it is located at the corner of Van Ness Ave and Geary St. The parking was indeed pricey, but I knew how expensive the prices around there were, too. As for the room comfort the TV in my room did not work when I tried to turn it on, and the building management person came and said this was because the TV input and output plugs had lots of dust. and then actually fixed it by removing the dust! The hotel staff were helpful informing me of what I wanted to know, so overall, I would recommend this hotel to those visiting San Francisco for the first time!!

If you are Japanese, you can visit Japan Town several blocks away from the hotel where you can find Daiso ($1.50 per item) grocery shop having various things from Japan!

family holiday

We loved the historic feel of this hotel. It was great to see all the period furnishings in the lobby. Our room was large and clean, the breakfast was amazing! We enjoyed our stay and were sad that we had eaten before we arrived because we would have loved to eat at Mel's!

Great Value

There is a diner next door with an inner door from the hotel which is good, has a nice breakfast. Which is good as the breakfast served by the hotel isn't that great, it is not bad, just not great. They do provide parking but it is best to try and check in early to ensure you get an assigned space as the spaces are limited. Also, parking cost about $35 a night, so that is something to remember when booking as you pay this when you get there. The location is okay, about a 10-15 minute drive to AT&T park if you are going to a Giants game and about 15-20 minutes from Pier 39. The hotel was clean, the rooms were pretty nice, the staff were very friendly and attentive to all our needs. I think this is great value for money.

Alcatraz - But book before you go. Often it is booked weeks in advance and so those tickets that are available during the few days you are there are more expensive.
