Hip, playful, and full of imagination describes the indulgent Hotel Vertigo, a reincarnation of the old Empire Hotel featured in Alfred Hitchcock's legendary work. Guests of the hotel can prepare to experience the city anew in accommodations that feel more like a private residential apartment than a hotel. Style, wonder and a sense of "anything goes" set this Nob Hill hotel apart from the rest in the the downtown San Francisco area.

Hotel Vertigo Rooms

Newly renovated deluxe room featuring a King or Queen-size white tufted-leather headboard, striking white and orange 300 thread count linens, and custom porcelain horse head bedside lamps, reflecting an elegant and delightful space spun with a dash of whimsy and fun. The wall art is a contemporary nod to Hitchcock's masterpiece "Vertigo", and rooms feature custom wingback chairs in vibrant orange leather stitched with the "Vertigo" moniker. Bathrooms are stylish in creamy white crocodile-patterned tiles, dark walnut vanities with specialty sinks, and oversized rain showerheads. Amenities include 32" flat screen TVs, ipod docking stations, refrigerators, robes, and in-room safes. Tyler Florence signature restaurant opens Spring 2009"

Hotel Vertigo

Interesting location on the edge of Nob Hill and the Tenderloin with close proximity to art colleges. It makes a good base to explore the city going into Downtown, Union Square, Nob Hill, Russian Hill and Fisherman's Wharf as long as you're prepared to do a bit of walking (which you should be, it's San Francisco after all). Hotel gives you a bit of a flavour of what living there would be like. A walk through the Tenderloin is an "experience" complete with being offered crack twice. Hotel itself is pretty basic but functional, clean and pretty much has whatever you want. Staff pretty much all seem like they'd rather be somewhere else but at the end of the day they are efficient, resolve any problem without issue and get the job done. If you want a big smile, go elsewhere. For example, a blocked toilet was attended to within 5 minutes at 10:30PM at night. You can't ask for me than that, can you? Recommended for an authentic experience in San Francisco. Would give it 3.5 stars.

Nightlife tip: Short walk from hotel

Dive bar a few hundred feet down the road on Sutter provided some entertainment and insight into the gritty side of San Francisco.

I was "upgraded" from unrenovated

I was "upgraded" from unrenovated room to a renovated room, sounds great, but there is a price to pay as I found out later, the room only had a pull-out (sofa) bed, which wasn't comfortable to sleep in. Given the choice I would rather choose unrenovated room with a proper bed, afterall what is a beautiful looking room with terrible bed to sleep in? I'd rather go for comfortable bed anytime.
