Lombard Street hotels
Lombard Street, with its famous crooked section, runs east to west on Russian Hill in San Francisco, California. Resident Carl Henry conceived the “switchback” design in 1922, in response to the naturally occurring, dangerously steep slope of the hill. Headed downhill, it is highlighted with red brick pavement, and green spaces filled with hydrangeas. Regulations include a summer parking ban and no eastbound traffic on holidays. Lombard Street has been the scene of car chases in the movies “What’s Up, Doc?” and “Magnum Force,” among others, with many mentions in art, film, television and comedy skits.
- Riding the cable cars up and downhill is part of the fun of any visit to San Francisco. The Hyde Street line stops atop the hill on Lombard Street.
- Carefully walk the curves or take the steps. Once you get to the bottom of the block, take a few steps back up to experience one of the steepest inclines in San Francisco.
- Take the best photos of Lombard Street from the corner of Leavenworth Street.
Taking a taxi to Lombard Street will take a bite out of your wallet. Cable cars, buses and Metro streetcars are managed by the Muni. Buses and trolleys run every 5-20 minutes. Underground streetcar lines all start at Embarcadero Station downtown. At San Francisco International Airport, catch the Super Shuttle to be conveniently dropped at any point within the city limits. Lombard Street shares Highway 101 designation with the Golden Gate Bridge. When time permits, scale the Coit Tower for panoramic views of this upscale Victorian neighbourhood and the city.
