Ferry Building hotels
A beaux-arts style structure designed by A. Page Brown in the late 19th century, the San Francisco Ferry Building has served as a terminal for ferries crossing the iconic San Francisco Bay since the building’s opening in 1892. Before the Golden Gate Bridge was completed in 1937, the San Francisco Ferry Building was one of the busiest ports in the world. Although ferry service still continues today, the Ferry Building is now more famous for its lavish shops and eateries, and a Farmer’s Market that features some of the best produce in San Francisco.
- Walk along the docks of the Ferry Building for stunning views of the San Francisco Bay and Bay Bridge.
- Visit the infamous Alcatraz Island Prison, which was once home to some of the country’s worst criminals and is now an iconic symbol of San Francisco.
- Explore the shoreline of nearby Treasure Island, where raucous sea lions can be seen frolicking in the bay.
Visitors travelling from Oakland can arrive to the Ferry Building via the bay’s unique ferry service. The main line of Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) runs directly beneath the Ferry Building and stops just one block from this historic building. The winding, hilly streets of San Francisco can be difficult to navigate by private car, so newcomers should take advantage of public transport or one of the many taxis hovering throughout the city’s downtown.
