Great America Attractions
The Disney Company has them, Universal Studios has them, and in 1992, Paramount Communications, at that time the owners of Paramount Pictures, decided it wanted to have them too. They are, of course, theme parks, and Paramount got in on the act by purchasing King’s Entertainment with its three theme parks, including Great America in Santa Clara California.
Great America is now owned by Cedar Fair Entertainment; and Cedar Fair has licensed Nickolodeon’s themes, ensuring the park’s popularity for years to come.
The twelve-plus hectares of Great America include a water park, Boomerang Bay, with thirteen water slides and its own water playhouse. The oldest of the five Great America roller coasters is the 31-metre high, 80 kph Demon Rollercoaster, and the newest is the Survivor. Based on the enormously popular TV reality series, the Survivor is a weaving, spinning, undulating ride set against the same sort of tropical backdrop as many of the shows have been.
In addition to its ten thrill rides, Great America has family rides featuring SpongeBob SquarePants™, the Hannah-Barbera family of ‘toon characters, and the RugRats™. Great America has the tallest two-story carousel on the planet, and the Logger’s Flume and Rip Roaring Rapids for kids who just love to get wet. Wearing quick-drying apparel for a day at Great America is recommended.
Nickelodeon™ Central is where kids can interact with all their favorite Nick performers, and the eighteen rides of Kidzville shrink the theme park to a size manageable for the littlest ones. Nickolodeon™ stage shows happen at all hours, and the Nickelodeon™ Celebration Parade with along with floats and more than a hundred performers, dances and clowns its way through Great America in a thirty-minute extravaganza.
Great America admission is $49.95 USD for those 3-61 and over 122cm tall; and 29.95 for those under 122cm. Hours vary and can be checked on the parks website.
Just blocks from Great America, the Santa Clara Holiday Inn Great America Hotel and only 6.5 kilometres from the San Jose Airport offers Internet access, microwaves, and refrigerators in each room.
