Disappointing

I treated my partner to two nights in the Royal York, Although the hotel was impressive to look at from the outside the room itself and staff let the hotel down. Our room looked over the train station, I didn't opt to pay for an upgraded park view so can't be too unhappy about this however we slept with the window open as the room was very warm in April. I was woken several times but train station announcement, it was also very windy outside however the bathroom fan howled all night. The room was fairly small however this was not a huge concern as we were out and about the majority of the time. One side of the bed however dipped significantly in the middle where your bottom and legs would lie, this caused an uncomfortable nights sleep. Although the bar is lovely and light and has a relaxed atmosphere the bar staff let is down a lot. I stood for several minutes to be served in a quiet bar in which two bar staff prioritised polishing cutlery over serving guests. I expected an apology for the delay, this was not offered at any point which I thought was rude. I feel the reception staff could also engage with guests more, on checking out I was not asked how my stay was which was disappointing. As a guest staying in the hotel and providing car registration details when checking in I feel it a little steep to charge guests £8/day to use the car park, day guests I understand but overnight guests paying a lot of money for a room I think is unjust. Overall the hotel is pleasant to look at however for £20/night more I would recommend to avoid the Royal York and book the Cedar Grant instead, it is a 1 minute walk further info the centre of York and a head and shoulders above the Royal York. We went to the Cedar Court for a coffee and seems far superior to the Royal York in presentation and treatment from staff who made us feel more than welcome.

Perfect stay in almost all aspects

Really enjoyed our night at the Royal York, the rooms where very spacious and all the staff where lovely and kind. The spa and fitness facilities where great open long hours so we managed to go 3 times in the space of 24hours. Only discomfort was the room got rather warm at night and with the safety windows we couldn't open them. but brilliant stay other than that.

Was supposed to be special occasion, ask girlfriend to marry me.

I booked this hotel well in advance for a special occasion, I was going to have a lovely weekend, take my girlfriend to York and while there I was going to ask here to marry me, but had problems from the moment we got there. 1. Took over 25 mins to check in, on website says you can check in after 2 p.m. We arrived there at 4pm and the receptionist rang to check with maids if 4 different rooms was ready ? Annd none of them was. 2. When we finally got to our room, the room did not look look or feel a 4star room, the radiator had paint missing, wallpaper had cracked where wall was painted over, the wardrobe and cupboards had holes where they changed fittings. 3. The room was well over priced at almost £118 a night, we complained to customer services about the the matters above, the offered free breakfast but they said they could move us. After ring them again them said they had another room for us to stay just the one night even tho I booked 2 night. After moving to the new room the fire alarm went off and had to evacuate the building. After all this within 1 hour of being there it upset my girlfriend and meesed all the plans I had to make this a special occasion. Out of 10 I would rate this place as 3 out of 10
