Swansea, United Kingdom
Swansea was once, to use Dylan Thomas' words, 'an ugly, lovely town,' a place of near-schizophrenic contrasts where bland-faced structures faced off against fine Swansea hotels, and spellbinding beaches fronted dilapidated buildings. Fortunately, far-sighted national and local authorities, aided by hard-working Swansea Jacks, as the city's residents are known, gradually turned this once ugly duckling city into a lovely swan of restful parks, great museums, charming pubs, and other attractions.
Intense bombing flattened much of Swansea's city centre during the Second World War, but several historic sites survived. The most notable of these are the windswept ruins of the 13th-century Swansea Castle, the charming 14th-century Cross Keys, and the colonnaded 19th-century Swansea Museum. Other historical attractions include the rather morbid Arthur's Stone, a neolithic burial site. The city's Mumbles district is home to Catherine Zeta-Jones, superb Swansea hotels, picturesque cottages, and a promenade that offers breathtaking views over Swansea Bay. The breathtaking Gower Peninsula, where beautiful countryside hugs bronze-hued beaches, is definitely worth a visit. It was the first place in Wales to be designated an area of outstanding natural beauty.
The M4 motorway provides an overland connection between Swansea and the cities of Cardiff and London. The city is also accessible by air, boat and train.
