Faded glory... and very dull.

I've known the Stratford for many years: it was a beautiful, old-world hotel with a personal, country style. Since it has become a Mercure. What a pity the Mercure has ruined it. Colourless, dark and very drab taste has dulled its charm and it is now devoid of any character or style. The designer/s has made the fatal mistake of creating a style distinctly at odds with the spirit of the building; its dull, drab, colourless and very boring. They have ignored the beauty of the building and made it look like a cheap motor-way hotel. There is nothing to soften the edges either. The room we had was tiny, all brown (yuck!) and totally style-less. The bed was awful and the pillow/duvet/bedding etc cheap and bin-end. The housekeeping was slack and poor: dirty dishes, glasses and trays were left in the corridor the entire time we were there. After checking out we had to go to the room to collect something we forgot. The room had been 'cleaned' - yet the sink was quite visibly dirty and far from gleaming. The car park is so small, with tiny spaces it would be a problem had we gone in a bid car. The staff weren't rude - but they were hardly charming. Marco's restaurant shows - like the hotel - how very wrong 'designers' get it in attempting to be trendy. Tables crammed in, ugly, poor taste and decor. Generally very average (even for a high street). This place is very far from a luxury hotel in every way. Despite its great location and history (why we went) - Mercure and its designers have really spoiled it. Very poor.

Stay here just for the location

The main reason to stay here is for the central location. The main building is very charming and beautifully presented. The staff are friendly, helpful and good-humoured. My double room was comfortable albeit a little tired. The parking offered was a huge plus as well as the proximity to the RSC. I would recommend his hotel purely for the location.

Perfect Location for the RSC Theatre

I stayed here so I could go and see Hamlet. The location of the hotel is perfect for the train station (I walked), town centre, Shakespeare's birthplace, and the RSC theatres. The room I stayed in quite large, and so was the bathroom. Staff were friendly, and the hotel's public areas are lovely, as is the food. The hotel is not well sign posted. I walked by it twice, as the outside building gives a different name, was wrapped in scaffolding, & there was no Mercure signage visible.

Ideal for a theatre weekend in Stratford

Ideally located very close to the theatres. Reception was excellent and we were booked in efficiently. Unfortunately the car park was full but alternative parking was available via the hotel at a nearby NCP car park at £5. We stayed for breakfast on Sunday morning and had a first class meal well presented with a range of offerings.

We stayed in Stratford for our wedding. the hotel was lovely. Very conveniently located. Staff friendly and attentive. Standard of facilities excellent. Arrive earlier rather than later to aviod not being able to park in hotel car park, as spaces are limited. Will definetly go back again and would recommend to others.

Maybe it is not fair to compare

Maybe it is not fair to compare a very old hotel with a modern one, but my wife and I and our daughter agreed that this was a unique experience, and well worth the price we paid. The rooms are very comfortable, and the atmosphere fantastic. So for a short stay in Stratford upon Avon we highly recommend it.
