Area description
Of course you can spend many hours enjoying its museum, exploring the estate, playing tennis or Pitch'n'Putt, swimming and having treatments in the Spa, but Pitlochry has so many things you really should see and do while you're here. Pitlochry is positioned in the centre of Scotland, just above the meeting of the Tay and Tummel Valleys. Since invaders began to travel from the sea up to the centre of Scotland on these rivers, Pitlochry has been on the main routes, from north to south and east to west. The Great North Road, used by Highland crofters to bring their cattle and sheep to the markets of Edinburgh, ran through Pitlochry, as did the 'Road to the Isles', which still forms part of the road from Pitlochry to the north. General Wades military roads, built in an attempt to control the rebellious Scots, are scattered around Highland Perthshire. Today Pitlochry enjoys the character of a small rural town, in one of Europes most beautiful and least inhabited areas.
