Great hotel & great location

Booked to stay here in April 2015 & found the hotel to be absolutely spot on. I was a little concerned about the reviews about noise from the nightclub below the hotel but because we were high up within the building, we couldn't really hear the commotion below us. There were a few ambulances and police cars with sirens on when it came to 'pub kicking out time' but whatever city you go to would be the same. The hotel was very central and we were lucky enough to grab one of the car parking spaces right outside the main steps. All in all, a brilliant stay and will definitely be back!

Met our needs

The hotel is in a good location being right next to the train station and newcastle town centre. Lots of bars and shops nearby also. The lobby of the hotel is nice, staff are friendly and the chandeliers beautiful. Our room (315) was a really good size and had nice furnishing but the decor does needs a little attention as there was paper peeling off the wall above the bed. The room was also a bit too warm for us and there is no way to control the temperature other than opening the window (which isn't ideal given the close location to train station, nightclubs etc). Minor things though a we only stayed two nights.

Visit Durham, about 15 minutes on the train. Beautiful little town and a great retreat from the hustle & bustle of busy Newcastle.

Up to standard

As always from the Royal, a welcoming and helpful booking in experience. Spacious single room, with a huge and cosy bathroom. All immaculately clean, and lots of thoughtful treats. Great that the windows actually opened, and I had total control of the radiators! Excellent position, next to the station, and buses outside the door. Plenty of good food in the vicinity My one and only moan, as everywhere -- no grab rails in the shower!

great

It had a great location . My room was out back --so no traffic noise at all, and i loved hearing/ feeling the rumbling of the trains under me ( I was on first floor ) and hearing the station announcements. Felt very 'Miss Marple ' . Staff very friendly. Room very clean . Really nice that they put complimentary water etc in the mini-bar. Great location for going around the area by train.

Potential unfulfilled

An old railway hotel the building has some stunning architectural features. Décor is generally good but we were bugged by sash windows that wouldn't stay open (no aircon here#, toilets constantly running, toiletries and towels not replenished despite unnecessarily changing towels every day. Breakfast good but overall a splendidly located city centre hotel that needs tender loving care and motivation of the domestic staff - reception however were quite good.

Business and holiday

The refurbishment since my last stay (about 5 years ago) is welcome and good. The atrium and staircase of this hotel are Victoriana at its best - pity they didn't paint the window frames. The location is great for getting around - next to the Central Station Metro and local bus stops including the Q1 Quayside shuttle. Not so great on a hot night with the windows open - trains are noisy! The free soft drinks and Kit-Kats in the fridge are a nice little bonus. Breakfast was to a good standard, but nobody in Britain seems able to serve a decent croissant. We did not use the hotel restaurant. Improvements? It would be asking a lot for air conditioning in all the rooms overlooking the station. The lifts could do with smartening up, and a control system where the call buttons work the lifts as a coordinated pair. Would we use it again? Yes.

Bruges Restaurant, Brentwood Avenue, just down the road from West Jesmond Metro station - excellent food, excellent value. Rasa in Queen Street for Keralan food - makes a welcome change from standard UK curry restaurants.

Fabulous

100 metres from Newcastle Railway Station this old hotel has been refurbished.and is a fantastic place to stay with a good restaurant. The room was large and the bathroom superb. There waerre a few snacks in the bar fridge which were free of charge! It was close to shops and the bus station as well as a short walk to the River Tyne
