Shoddy quality to bedroom, bizarre housekeeping

I stayed here for the first time, for a week on business. I have stayed in several Manchester hotels on numerous occasions but found the Thistle quite disappointing, and poor value for money. The hotel seems great on arrival, like a traditional upmarket hotel with a very professional reception area, and busy bar and restaurant. Once you get upstairs to the bedrooms, it's a different matter. Although the bed was large and comfortable, it dominated the cramped room. The small desk and low chair were not suitable for working, although the wifi connection compared well to most other nearby hotels offering free wifi. Although my room had a large window, the quality of the window fitting was so awful that a freezing cold wind was blowing through the window. Each night I was convinced the window must be open, but it was closed. (Thankfully my room was not facing onto a busy road.) There was a large, old-fashioned and noisy air conditioning unit at the opposite end of the bedroom, which I could use to blast out hot air to counteract the cold draught - but this never created a stable and appropriate environment for sleeping or working in. The housekeeping was also strange. Although lots of toiletries and other items were provided (e.g., face flannel, shoe shine), these were taken away right after I used them and never replaced. The staff should either leave things alone for guests to use again, or replace things they take away. On one evening, I returned to my room and the trash had been removed from my bin but left forgotten on my desk. These complaints are all just minor irritations that as a guest, you feel are too petty to bug receptionists with, but add up during the week to become really annoying. I won't choose to stay there again.

Super location, clean place to stay

The location of the hotel, in a great area of Portland Street, Manchester, is everything that counts about this hotel. We stayed here for four nights, the purpose of our trip was a party at a club and to watch a United game. Housekeeping rudely and incessantly knocked on the door EACH morning between 8:00am and 8:30am without fail, rudely stating that the 'do not disturb sign' was not on the door. In any case, we explained that for the duration of the trip we were to wake up late only to be hassled awake each morning by housekeeping before 8:30am nonetheless. Other than this nuisance by non-professional staff, the hotel was pleasant, clean and a great place to stay, though would consider some place else next time due to the unnecessary disturbances.

birthday stay for sister in law

Booked two rooms one for my partner and I plus my brother and his wife. Stay was great, you can hear the 'neighbours' but didn't affect our sleep. Currently . Reside in Australia and would recommend to people wanting to be central to everything in Manc. I over slept till 12.30 the next day with the hotel not even raising a brow - guess that what happens when you order room service (wine!) at 3.30am.

Ok for one night stay

The room was very small, although enough for us as we were staying only one night. I would not have wanted to stay in the room any longer than that. It was clean and reasonably quiet I could not get the air conditioning to increase sufficiently in temperature hence me and my husband woke early hours of the morning absolutely freezing. There was no explanation to tell us the car park was an NCP next door and I had to physically go to the hotel and ask as we spent 15 minutes trying to get through to customer services by telephone, as it is a national phone service for this hotel. The breakfast was not included but we paid. It is buffet style with a good choice but we had to ask for a hot drink and were eventually brought a pot of coffee. The waiter apologised that we had not been greeted into the restaurant when we had arrived and our drink order taken. The hotel served our purpose but if we had stayed longer than one night I would have been asking to be moved to another room!

Great central location but rooms small

Central location was very good , but the rooms were very small for the price paid. Also there was no parking included , but you could use city parking facility nearby. Close to all city areas so met our needs.
