Less than a few kilometres from the city centre of Manchester, Whitworth Art Gallery is located south of the University of Manchester campus, within the Whitworth Park grounds. Managed by the University of Manchester, the Gallery houses some of the greatest collections of modern and historic art found in the United Kingdom, The collections, which consist of 55,000 items, also include rare wallpaper designs, historic prints and textiles. The Gallery was founded by Robert Darbishire in 1889. Today, the Gallery is one of the most visited attractions in Manchester, accommodating thousands of visitors each year.

Bus number 147, called the Oxford Road Link, leaves from Piccadilly Station and travels near the Gallery; visitors taking this service must get off at Nelson Street and walk a few minutes to the Gallery. The nearest train stations to Whitworth are the Piccadilly, Manchester Oxford Road and Victoria stations. The closest Metrolink stations to the gallery are Piccadilly Gardens and St. Peter Square, which are about two to four kilometres away from Whitworth.
