Royal Exchange Theatre
The Royal Exchange Theatre is located in the Victorian Royal Exchange Building in the heart of Manchester’s city centre. The building itself has a tumultuous history that began in the 18th century as a trading post for cotton and African slaves. The Royal Exchange has been damaged several times including by a Nazi bombing raid during WWII. The Royal Exchange Theatre is a true “theatre in the round” as the stage is flanked on all sides by seating. The unique theatre has been the home to thousands of performances, including revivals of classics as well as the newest contemporary dramas.
- Take a tour of the historic Royal Exchange building where the Royal Theatre is located. The building has played an important role in Manchester’s rich history and is said to harbour the ghosts of several famous actors.
- Buy unique souvenirs from your trip to Manchester at the Royal Exchange Shopping Centre located within the Royal Exchange Complex and featuring an array of upmarket stores.
- Walk through the Royal Exchange Great Hall, which is lined with art and houses the Royal Exchange Theatre structure, a seven-sided steel and glass module straight out of a science fiction novel.
The Royal Exchange Theatre is situated at the centre of the city and can be accessed using the city’s efficient public transportation. The theatre is just a short walk from all the major bus stops in the city centre and can also easily be reached by foot via the Piccadilly and Victoria rail stations. Manchester’s Metrolink Tram has a stop at Market Street, just five minutes away from the Royal Exchange Theatre. The city centre can be a difficult place to find parking, so plan ahead and get there early to avoid missing the opening curtain.
