Museum of Transport
Sitting in the British Midlands, Manchester has had a long history of growth and industry. During these periods, transport has always been an important service, getting good people to their workplaces or throughout the city for shopping and entertainment. Nestled just north of the Manchester city centre, the Museum of Transport collects and displays over 100 vehicles and related material used in the city throughout history. Ordinarily, the Museum of Transport in Manchester has around 70 buses on show, as well as cool examples of trams, trolleybuses, uniforms, and other paraphernalia (including the uniform and equipment worn by Stan the conductor in the Harry Potter films).
- Browse the massive collection of vehicles in the Museum of Transport, kept in pristine condition with their original livery, including a Salford fire engine from the 1940’s.
- Explore the surrounding area of the Manchester including the Cheetham Hill area, and pay a visit to the Manchester Fort shopping centre, right across Queens Rd.
- Book your visit ahead of time on the museum's website and explore their extensive archives of maps, timetables, tickets, and other documents from the Manchester’s interesting transport history.
The Museum of Transport is clearly sign-posted from the city centre (located southwest on Cheetham Hill Rd.), and is an easy walk from the Manchester Fort shopping centre. If you're travelling via the (extremely appropriate) public transport system, bus routes 88, 89, 135, and 151 stop near the museum. If you're driving to the museum, parking is available on the street near the museum, but spaces are limited so you might want to visit early to avoid missing out. If you do, there's no need to panic—Manchester has paid parking spaces, particularly in the shopping centre.
