Museum of Science and Industry

The extensive displays in Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry are designed to enlighten and entertain visitors with the history of the Manchester’s technological achievements. Located just a few minutes from Manchester’s city centre, the entrance to the Museum of Science and Industry is marked by a large industrial sculpture that hints at the exhibits found within the museum. The museum’s interactive displays provide information on the history of aviation, computing and trains, displaying replicas of many important, historical planes and locomotives. Visitors will be charmed by the quaintness of the steam locomotives that carry passengers to the various exhibits on the museum grounds.

  • See a replica of the famous Hawker Hunter airplane on display in the Aircraft Exhibit of Manchester’s Museum of Science. Learn how this single-seater played a crucial role for the Royal Air Force during Wold War?
  • Take a look at the world’s first stored-program computer, The Manchester Small Scale Experimental Machine. Marvel at the evolution of computing by comparing today’s smartphones and slender laptops to this relic that takes up an entire room.
  • Walk through the Connected Earth Gallery to see Manchester’s historic role in communications unravelled in this captivating display.

Because of its location just outside of Manchester’s city centre, the Museum of Science and Industry can be easily reached by taking the train or tram to the Deansgate stop, which is just a five-minute walk from the Museum. There is a large car park near the museum, but it fills up quickly (especially on the weekends) so get there early if you want to find a good place to park. Many travellers choose to bike to the Museum of Science and Industry by taking the Modern History Heritage Cycle Trail that leads cyclists past some of Manchester’s most important historical sites.
