Free Trade Hall
The location of the Free Trade Hall on Peter Street in the city centre of Manchester, England was originally the site of the famous Peterloo Massacre in 1819 when cavalry charged into a large crowd that demanded the return of parliamentary representation. Currently at Radisson Blu Edwardian Hotel, the only remnant of the Free Trade Hall, constructed in 1856, is the building’s outer façade. Originally constructed as a meeting place, the hall has a storied history, used as a setting for political events in the 1800s, and then as a concert venue from the 1950s through the 1980s.
- Many artefacts that were part of the Free Trade Hall were saved, cleaned, and placed in prominent public areas of the Radisson Blu Edwardian Hotel lobby to commemorate the site’s rich history.
- Eight stone statues that once stood on Manchester’s Windmill Street depicting music, dancing, singing, drama, public speaking, education, sports, and cinema are also displayed inside.
- Visitors can see a portion of the Free Trade Hall’s famous autograph wall where performers touring Manchester such as Louis Armstrong, Yehudi Menuhin, Arthur Rubinstein, and Sybil Thorndyke signed their names.
