Free Trade Hall
The location of the Free Trade Hall on Peter Street in the city centre of Manchester, England was originally the site of the famous Peterloo Massacre in 1819 when cavalry charged into a large crowd that demanded the return of parliamentary representation. Currently at Radisson Blu Edwardian Hotel, the only remnant of the Free Trade Hall, constructed in 1856, is the building’s outer façade. Originally constructed as a meeting place, the hall has a storied history, used as a setting for political events in the 1800s, and then as a concert venue from the 1950s through the 1980s.
- Many artefacts that were part of the Free Trade Hall were saved, cleaned, and placed in prominent public areas of the Radisson Blu Edwardian Hotel lobby to commemorate the site’s rich history.
- Eight stone statues that once stood on Manchester’s Windmill Street depicting music, dancing, singing, drama, public speaking, education, sports, and cinema are also displayed inside.
- Visitors can see a portion of the Free Trade Hall’s famous autograph wall where performers touring Manchester such as Louis Armstrong, Yehudi Menuhin, Arthur Rubinstein, and Sybil Thorndyke signed their names.
Reaching the Free Trade Hall and Radisson Blu Edwardian Hotel is easy. Simply board a free Metroshuttle 1 bus outside of Piccadilly Rail Station. The ride takes approximately 10 minutes. Metroshuttle also connects the Free Trade Hall with other points of interest in the city centre. Taxis from the rail station are also available. British Rail connects Manchester with cities throughout the United Kingdom, as well as Manchester International Airport, with destinations throughout Europe and North America. The city is approximately four hours northwest of London by rail and less than an hour by air.
