Cornerhouse is nestled in the heart of the North’s creative capital and is certainly Manchester’s centre for cinema and contemporary visual art. This media and arts mega-centre is situated on Oxford Street and occupies two buildings—one a former furniture store and the other a cinema that evolved through many titles and roles before it transformed to the cutting-edge establishment it is today. With an international and innovative film bill and a visual arts programme that emphasises audience participation and engagement, Cornerhouse in Manchester plays a significant role in the cultural life of the North West region and reaches beyond these borders to engage with an international audience.

  • Discover contemporary art and theory at the Cornerhouse bookstore, an outlet for contemporary visual arts publications with a range of over 2,000 titles in stock.
  • Attend ¡Viva!, an annual celebration of Spanish and Latin American film which combines comedic and dramatic screenings from the Spanish-speaking world—the recent festival included the first Catalan-language film to win the Goya Award for best film.
  • Watch edgy independent films from all around the world at Cornerhouse’s numerous cinemas, this theatre is famous for screening UK premieres of cult classics through the years.

Cornerhouse is well-situated on Manchester’s mad streets and can be reached by various modes of public transport. Metroshuttle buses are free to use and travel along Oxford Street to the railway station which is adjacent to the arts centre. The Metrolink, a modern tram network with trams running every 12 minutes or so, stops at St Peter’s Square which is a mere five-minute walk from Cornerhouse. Visitors driving to this location can park in the nearby 24-hour car park on Whitworth Street and some on-street parking is also available at certain times. Those walking around Manchester’s quaint streets will find this venue to be a nice and mind-blowing evening out.
