Chinese Arts Centre
Exuberant, fresh, and decisively projective, Manchester’s contemporary arts scene has the potential to get you hooked. Founded in 1986, Manchester’s Chinese Arts Centre is a definitive hub for both the development of Chinese contemporary artists and social engagement with them. While the centre devotes much attention to Chinese artists, there are many venues and partnerships in place with the United Kingdom’s Chinese and Hong Kong’s artists. The centre offers many community workshops and operates an artist live-in program. While in Manchester, a visit to the Chinese Arts Centre is a wonderful way to get familiar with contemporary movements in international art.
- Take a tour of the latest exhibitions in the Chinese Arts Centre gallery in Manchester, which has displayed work by successful artists like Gordon Cheung and Liu Xiao Dong.
- Try your hand at traditional Chinese arts like opera mask-making, origami, calligraphy, or dance; or dive right into the contemporary arts with a workshop run by the Chinese Arts Centre.
- Add to your personal collection with one of the Centre’s unique art books, brimming with biographies, interviews, and showcases of artists from Manchester, across the U.K., and of course China.
The Chinese Arts Centre is located in Manchester’s Downtown. Taxis are certainly an option, as there are many available for hire throughout the city. If you are already Downtown, you can reasonably walk to the Centre from the Church of England and Market Street to the south and the Manchester Cathedral Gardens to the west. Trams cover much of the Downtown district, and the closest stop is Shudehill station, which is conveniently located just across the street from the Chinese Arts Centre. The closest bus station is Shudehill/Thomas Street, just around the corner.
