Canal Street hotels
Located on the west side of Manchester’s Rochdale Canal, Canal Street is one of England’s key hotspots for sexual liberation. Colourful Canal Street is closed to automobile traffic but is always bustling with crowds sweeping up and down the sidewalks enjoying local restaurants and cafes. Famous for its multitude of gay bars and clubs, Canal Street has enjoyed a reputation as a largely homosexual community since the opening of the world-famous Manto Club in the 1990’s. Today, Canal Street is always teeming with exciting nightlife, thumping baselines, and some of the best dining in England.
- Admire the Beacon of Hope Memorial, Manchester’s permanent memorial to AIDS sufferers located in lovely Sackville Park.
- Visit Manchester in August when Canal Street hosts the annual Gay Pride Festival, a lively and flamboyant street parade that welcomes LGBT supporters from around the world.
- Watch a play at the Royal Exchange Theatre, one of the best venues in Manchester for top-notch drama.
For those visitors travelling via public transportation, get off at either Oxford Road or the Piccadilly train station to be within close walking distance to Canal Street. Visitors truly hoping to appreciate Canal Street’s culture should, indeed, travel on foot. This famed Manchester location was, after all, pedestrianised for the purposes of accommodating foot traffic. The locks and canals surrounding Canal Street are perfect for late night strolls where locals and visitors alike can be seen socializing at all hours. Bicycles are also very popular in this area and are available for rent on and around Canal Street.
