Dining

The Library Restaurant
bbar & Restaurant, facing the Royal Mews of Buckingham Palace, is a South African themed venue also run by the family-owned Red Carnation Hotel Collection. It is just on your left as you exit reception at The Rubens. Sporting vintage photographs of big game, faux giraffe skin fabrics, ethnic carvings, leopard spotted lampshades and polished zebrano wood table tops it's a funky mix of safari chic and colonial cool. The menu is international, but with a strong South African accent lent by dishes like Springbok fillet, Grilled Boerewors Sausages and Bobotie Spring Rolls. The two bars serve an impressive 110 wines (over 50 by the glass) from an eclectic list of old and new world producers including Bouchard Finalyson, a vineyard in South Africa, also belonging to The Red Carnation Hotel Collection. Passionate mixologists prepare over 60 cocktails, from the classics to the more exotic, while the warm and relaxed service creates an invitingly intimate atmosphere.

Old English Charm

Hotel is right opposite Buckingham Palace and is an old world English charmer. Public and Dining areas and bedrooms to match - a tidy bit of old grandeur. I had double room - plenty big enough for me (single) but might be considered a bit nippy for two - it could have done with an extra couple of feet between the bed end and the wall (would have stopped my continually catching myself on the wall-mounted flat screen TV). Bedroom otherwise spotless and as fresh as big-pattern, floral fabric wall cladding can be....old world English charm. Overall I'd give it a reasonably big "tick".

Pleasant stay, minus the drainage issues

The good: The bed was comfortable, and the decorations were very classic. Plenty of drawers for storage. The coffee in the room was excellent hubby had plunger coffee every day! The staff were very friendly, helpful, and very accommodating. The hotel was very kind to allow us to store our luggage for a few days while we went on a side trip, saving us the trouble of finding a luggage storage facility. There was also a computer and printer available for usage, which was useful for us to print our bookings, etc. As the afternoon tea was fully booked on Halloween, the staff offered cream tea instead, which was tea with scones, clotted cream, and jam. We enjoyed it very much, especially the clotted cream! We also had the pre-theatre dinner at The Old Masters Carvery and Grill Room, and the food was pretty good. We preferred the pork roast to the beef rib though. The location was quite good, with the Victoria Station nearby, so it was very convenient for us to make our way here from Gatwick Airport. The not-so-good: The room was quite small, and the bathroom even smaller. The floor would get wet whenever we shower. The drainage was poor and it took very long for water to drain out in the basin and in the bath tub... It was rather frustrating as we had arrived close to midnight and were super tired, and standing in a tub of soapy water made things worse. We feedback to the staff the next day and the basin issue was resolved by the time we returned from our excursion. The bath tub situation improved, but we eventually resolved the situation by turning and removing the stopper completely. Despite the little hiccups, we still enjoyed our stay here.

Good location and cosy rooms

What a nice place yo stay. Staff is friendly (maybe some times even too friendly so be careful not to look artificial). Rooms are very small but well decorated and cosy. Nice breakfast (quite costly, 19 Pounds). Internet worked probaly.

Excellent hotel and first class

Excellent hotel and first class service. All staff were very attentive and welcoming. The room was spotless and perfectly appointed; shower was excellent. Great location over looking the Royal Mews, also perfect for the high quality shops of St James's street, Sloan square etc. The food in the restaurants is of a high standard (even down to the bacon butties, which are to die for.) Victoria tube station is only a moments walk away, providing endless possibilities for sight seeing, and an easy link direct from Kings Cross Station. All in all a wonderful hotel, which some may feel is on the expensive side, but for the service and facilities it offers excellent value for money.
