Trafalgar Square hotels
Trafalgar Square was originally called Charing, and then Charing Cross, and is the largest square in London. Considered the heart of the city, Trafalgar Square is surrounded by things to see and do, and important historic sites, including the National Gallery and St. Martin-in-the-Fields church. Central to the square is Nelson’s Column, a vertical column 52 metres high that honours Admiral Nelson and his victory over the French in 1805. At the top is a statue of Nelson that raises it an additional 5.5 metres. The four bronze lions at its feet present a favourite photo opportunity for visitors
- Check out the current exhibit on the Fourth Plinth in the Northwest corner of Trafalgar Square; originally a base for an equestrian statue that was never installed, it now houses changing modern exhibits.
- Compare “perches”, “chains”, and other old London measurements against the modern feet and yards on the wall behind the Café.
- Stop at the Café to rest your feet and grab a cup of tea or a snack after walking around Trafalgar Square.
You can get to Trafalgar Square in any of the usual ways. There is little inexpensive parking, so taking mass transit or walking around London is usually the best method. There are three London Underground stations serving Trafalgar Square: Charing Cross station, which has an exit in the square itself for the Northern and Bakerloo lines, Embankment station, and Leicester Square station. In addition, there are almost 20 bus lines that connect in the square from other parts of the city. Much of the square itself has been closed to motorized traffic and paved for easy pedestrian traffic.
