Temple church hotels
Dating back to the late Twelfth century, the Temple Church is one of the oldest standing religious sites in London. This massive structure was originally built by the Knights Templar, an influential, secretive religious order with ties to King Henry the Third. Despite being damaged during the Second World War, London’s Temple Church has been renovated and remains an active house of worship today. In addition to its historical significance, the building is known for its mark in literary and popular culture, serving as the setting for scenes in Shakespeare’s Henry VI and the film The Da Vinci Code.
- Viewtheteneffigy memorials, which lie in the old section of Temple Church. These ornate effigies depict knights in full body armour, solemnly resting in their eternal slumber.
- Get a look at the wooden altar, designed by one of London’s famous architects, Sir Christopher Wren, displaying the Ten Commandments and the Lord’s Prayer as it rests in the nave of Temple Church.
- Attend a traditional organ recital at Temple Church, which is held midday every Wednesday and features some of the oldest orchestral music in London.
Tourists from abroad who wish to visit Temple Church can fly into one of London’s international airports, including Gatwick and Heathrow. From the terminals, guests can hire either taxicabs or rental cars to take them to London, or they can take advantage of the city’s extensive public transportation system. The underground subway, popularly known as the “Tube,” may be the easiest mode of transport to the Temple Church, as Temple Station is located conveniently near the church. Tourists who hire taxis can ask their drivers to take them to Fleet Street, where they can reach Temple Church on foot.
