Tate Modern

Art buffs from around the world arrive in droves at the doors of the Tate Modern, London’s recent addition to the Tate Group of Galleries, the United Kingdom’s prime repository of art. Opened in 2000 in the disused Bankside Power Station on the banks of the Thames, Tate Modern holds artworks from the beginning of the twentieth century to the present. The artworks are arranged thematically throughout the building, and include paintings by such notable twentieth century artists as Pablo Picasso, Henri Mattisse, and a plethora of others.

  • Find your own space on the entrance floor of the Tate Modern, Turbine Hall, and check out London’s latest art exhibitions.
  • Taste some sweet eye candy on level 5 in the abstract art section, and contemplate some fascinating cubist and futurist works.
  • Get a sense of the bizarre and strange in the Surrealist Room on the third floor of the Tate Modern, with pieces by many celebrated surrealists such as Salvador Dalí.

Heathrow International Airport services greater London, and transfers for the 25 kilometre trip to London city are abundant. The tube station runs from the airport into the city, and for the Tate Modern, the closest station is Southwark on the Jubilee line. Bus routes 45, 63 and 100 stop on Blackfriars bridge road, close to the Tate Modern. The Tate Boat runs between the Tate Britain and the Tate Modern, docking at Bankside pier and Millbank pier. It’s not recommended that you drive, as this area of London has few parking facilities.
