One of the oldest sections in London, Southwark is a borough situated southeast of the city centre. Southwark is an interesting place to visit, mainly because of its history. An original ancient borough in Surrey County, it is the site where the capital’s arts and entertainment industry first flourished. The borough’s former theatres, like the Rose and the Hope, were the prime venues for Shakespearean plays during the 16th century. Southwark houses magnificent structures like the historic bridge, Kingswood House, and the modern City Hall, which reveals the progress and success of architecture in the capital.
- Watch world-class performances from one of the best theatres in London, the Globe Theatre.
- Take a tour to enjoy the collection displays and multimedia presentations at Tate Modern, a popular art gallery located in the Bankside Power Station.
- Visit the beautiful Southwark Cathedral, one of the oldest surviving Gothic structures in London.
The Southwark Borough is served by the London Underground Train System (the Tube), and is included on the Jubilee Line. The tube station stop is located at the corner of The Cut and Blackfriars Road, between the Waterloo and London Bridge stations. You may also choose to alight from either of these stations, as they are nearer to the historic part of Southwark. To travel this route, you need to purchase a Travelcard Zone 1. There are also regular city buses that go through this borough from other parts of London.
