What started as a 19th century residential suburb of London has been transformed into a busy cosmopolitan street in the Bayswater District. Queensway is now offers a melting-pot of diverse restaurant options, pubs and upmarket stores making this bustling street one of the most colourful and interesting in the neighbourhood. The road is named for Queen Victoria, who was born close by in Kensington Palace, and who oversaw many of the early store openings on this historic high street. A favourite with tourists, Queensway today reflects the diversity of this great city as shown by the numerous Chinese and Arab restaurants and shops that now fill the street.
- Visit the historic Whiteley’s Shopping Centre, which was built on the site of London’s first store built in 1867.
- Stroll through the Queensway Market, where shoppers can find the widest selection of shops selling food, clothes and antiques in all of London.
- Glide around the Queens Ice and Bowl ice rink, a great spot to avoid the summer heat while perfecting your skating technique and watching others fall down.
This neighbourhood is well connected to the rest of London by public transport at the Queensway and Bayswater stops of the underground system located on the street. Reaching Heathrow or Gatwick Airport from Queensway can be tricky, so visitors are advised to fully study the city’s public transport system to find the best and cheapest ways to connect. Its proximity to Hyde Park makes this a lovely area to explore on foot for passengers getting off at the Bayswater or Liverpool Street stations. The cost of taxis can be high so planning ahead is a worthwhile investment.
