Natural History Museum
Located on Exhibition Road in London’s posh South Kensington district, this institution is considered a cathedral of nature and one of the landmark buildings of England. The Natural History Museum of London is a world-renowned research facility that is home to more than seventy million items. Located in the soaring 19th century Alfred Waterhouse building, the museum’s collections started with specimens taken from the British Museum. Since then the Natural History Museum has blossomed into one of the premier museums in the world largely due to its unmatched collection of dinosaur fossils, as well as its ornate architecture.
- Come see the spirit collections, creatures preserved in alcohol, at the Darwin Centre of the Natural History Museum of London, where Archie the giant squid is the main attraction.
- Be entertained and taught simultaneously at The Attenborough Studio, which is named for the revered Sir David Attenborough and includes daily multimedia displays and lectures.
- Visit the Red Zone and learn how the ever-changing earth has evolved over the centuries. Examine rocks, fossils and gemstones under microscopes in this geological lab.
South Kensington is the closest stop on the London Underground and visitors can walk the connecting tunnel to emerge at the front door of the Natural History Museum. Buses also stop on Exhibition Road, so you can take advantage of all three museums located in this area. This area of South Kensington is full of historical buildings and astounding architecture that will best be enjoyed on foot, as the green spaces around the museums are great for relaxing strolls. Parking is limited around the museums, so people are encouraged to use public transport or bicycles to avoid the hassle.
