Kennington is a lovely, tree-lined area in South London situated mostly within the borough of Lambeth. Some historians date Kennington back to the 11th century when it was known as a holy place of sacred assembly. The large historic homes that still grace the neighbourhood’s streets pay testament to the time when the area was home to affluent members of London’s elite. The area has become a favourite among young urban professionals who enjoy its many green spaces as well as its location and proximity to the city centre, which makes this home to many upscale restaurants and trendy boutiques.
- Stroll through the meandering paths of Kennington Park, the first public park in South London that has often been the gathering place for important public gatherings and protests.
- Watch an exhilarating cricket match at The Oval, a 19th century stadium that has played a large part in the evolution of the sport and its popularity in London.
- Visit the Imperial War Museum that was built during WWI to honour the sacrifices and efforts made by the British military.
Kennington is technically located in Inner London, so is well connected by the city’s efficient public transportation. There are five nearby stations on the London Underground, including the Kennington tube station located in the centre of the city. The Vauxhall station takes passengers to the Waterloo station in the city and other areas beyond. This locality is the southernmost point for the Barclay’s Cycle Hire Scheme and there are several docking stations where cyclists can hire a bike, which is an excellent way to explore the whimsical streets and historical sights of Kennington.
