Imperial War Museum
The Imperial War Museum in London offers free admission to visit this former hospital for the mentally fresh. Its name was Bethlehem Royal Hospital but over time “Bethlehem” morphed into "Bedlam" for the Eighteenth century visitors who would pay a penny to attend the "freak" show at the hospital. As civilization “evolved” so did treatment for these patients. As the need for this hospital diminished, this location on Lambeth Road, South Bank, in London became home to the Imperial War Museum, a place to recognize the impact of modern war. Transformation from a London hospital to the interactive museum is evident as you enter this powerful yet sensitive and thought-provoking establishment.
- Explore this munitions wonderland, alive with missiles, submarines, tanks, and planes hanging from the ceiling—children can climb into many cockpits and explore arcade-style touch-screens.
- Reflect at the galleries, which focus on the horrors and lessons of two World Wars, heroes of extreme courage, and mysterious figures leading double-lives as spies.
- Visit the London Imperial War Museum’s third floor to experience the thought-provoking issues of the Holocaust and European society.
London is a very old city, almost like a museum unto itself, with the Imperial War Museum being one of the most interesting in the United Kingdom. This museum is only five minutes from the centre of London by road and approximately 2km by foot. There are as many tours as there are places to see, so feel free to expand your modes of travel from walking to cycling, taxi service to boat tours.
