Farringdon is one of the historic neighbourhoods in London. The name means “fern-covered hill”, and the land’s history goes back to the thirteenth century. The neighbourhood has become one of London’s trendier locations, becoming a Victorian haven for young tasteful tenants. Farringdon is well-known traditionally for its meat and produce markets, and is located close to St. Paul’s Cathedral, the seat of the Bishop of London (a site in use since the seventh century). Farrington is a great slice of London, offering a memorable blend of history, fine dining, nightlife, and visual splendour.
- Dine at the excellent restaurants in Farringdon around Charterhouse Street like Smiths of Smithfield, a fantastic taste of London.
- Tour St. Etheldreda’s Church, which is the oldest Roman Catholic church in London and was mentioned in Shakespeare; how’s that for culturally significant?
- Visit St. John’s Gate and the Museum of the Order of St. John to learn about the extraordinary development of an ambulance brigade during the Crusades in Jerusalem.
One of the best ways to get to Farringdon is to ride the ubiquitous London Underground, which connects to Farringdon Station. The region is also served by First Capital Connect trains between Bedford and Brighton. Passengers can also travel to Barbican and Moorgate using the service, or use a number of bus routes which serve this area on a daily basis. Taxis and minicabs are also available as a means of transport to and from the airport, but London cabs are a little expensive—with so many public transports serving London, you might walk around leisurely, enjoying the atmosphere all day.
