East End hotels
East End, of ‘Charles Dickens’ fame (or ‘Jack the Ripper’ infamy), is located north of the River Thames, and east of the walled medieval city of London. It had a chequered history until the 19th century, but developed rapidly since then. Today, it is a colourful concoction of cultures, both native English and immigrant, which have significantly transformed its cultural landscape. It is well known for its rich folk heritage, vibrant nightlife, and the excellent architectural designs of some of its most prominent buildings and landmarks. Although multicultural in outlook, East End has retained much of its intrinsic English flavour.
- Shop for the latest in high-end fashion and a lot more under the glass-canopied splendour of Spitalfields Market, the oldest market in London.
- Party from dusk to dawn at the huge nightclub in East End’s Stratford Rex, also a highly popular multipurpose entertainment venue capable of hosting 2,500 guests.
- See world-renowned contemporary art exhibits, or watch a film or live concert at East End’s century-old Whitechapel Art Gallery, London.
Although the East End district is accessible by bus, car or taxi, heavy road traffic make above ground trains and London’s world-famous “Tube” (underground train system) smarter, quicker and more convenient options. The best Tube stations to board trains heading to this district are Aldgate on the ‘Circle’ and ‘Metropolitan’ lines, or Aldgate East and White Chapel on the ‘City’ and ‘District-Hammersmith’ lines. On the other hand, over-ground trains of the East London network also connect several stations in the inner East End area, such as Whitechapel, Wapping, Hoxton, Shadwell and Shoreditch High Street.
