Cutty Sark hotels
The Cutty Sark is a retired 19th century clipper ship situated in the centre of Greenwich in southeast London, England. When this tall ship was built in 1869 it was one of the fastest sailing vessels in the world and played an important role in the English tea and wool trades until it was rendered obsolete by the development of the steam engine. Since its retirement the Cutty Sark has been restored and preserved as a museum and part of the National Historic Fleet Core Collection and has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area.
- Visit the gallery beneath the Cutty Sark and you will find the world’s largest collection of figureheads, an impressive collection that is a must see for maritime history buffs visiting London.
- Learn about how sea travel affected the history of London and the world at the National Maritime Museum that is near the Cutty Sark site.
- Stroll through the glass ceilinged visitor’s centre at the Cutty Sark Museum to get a close up look at the stern of the ship that was restored after damage from a massive fire in 2007.
London features some of the best public transportation in the world and it is easy to reach the Cutty Sark using a combination of transport. The Dockland’s Light Railway has a stop at the Cutty Sark station that is just about a one-minute walk away. From the station you can get connections to the city centre as well as the London Underground. For those who want to take a more scenic approach there are riverboats and ferries that leave from the docks in central London and stop at the Greenwich Piers right next to the ship.
