Borough of London
The Borough of London is the area of central London generally called “The City.” The boundaries of The City have gone unchanged since the Middle Ages, making it one of the oldest continuous boroughs in the world. Even though the bombs and fires of the two World Wars and the subsequent post-war redevelopment have altered The City’s appearance, there nonetheless remain many historical buildings dappled amongst the skyscrapers. Though it boasts a mere 11,000 residents, The City is an international Mecca of business, finance and culture that attracts hundreds of thousands of people each day.
- Visit the stone Roman Doric column of the Monument to the Great Fire of London and see where the fire that ravaged London started in 1666.
- Walk to the top of Ludgate Hill where you will enjoy panoramic views of London and the ornate façade of St. Paul’s Cathedral.
- Walk through the incredible medieval Great Hall of the Guildhall Building, a fifteenth-century masterpiece of architecture that served as the town hall for hundreds of years.
The Borough of London is well served by the London Underground, which has eleven stations within the borough’s boundaries. Three National Rail termini are located within The City and there are many bus lines servicing the area. National motorways connect many locations within London Borough; however, those who are driving should be aware that parking is difficult to find. Similarly, drivers must pay congestion fees, so it can be quite expensive to take a car to London Borough, even for a few hours. For those travelling by air, there is direct train and shuttle service from Gatwick Airport.
