Big Ben hotels
The iconic Big Ben four-faced clock tower is not only one of the most famous structures in England but one of the most recognizable in the world. This prominent Gothic Revival structure was completed in 1858 and was Augustus Pugin’s final architectural design before descending into madness. Since its completion, however, it has become the symbol of London not only for its visual appeal but for the sound of the famous chimes housed within. Big Ben has been used in many films as an establishing shot of this grand old city, cementing its place in popular lore.
- Tour the Houses of Parliament near Big Ben, where one thousand years of London history haunt the halls of this beautiful, iconic building. Visitors can even sit in on a parliamentary debate.
- Enjoy the stunning, untouched 14th century ribbed vault found inside the Jewel Tower, just across from Big Ben, where vaulted ceilings and medieval relics await visitors.
- Visit the world famous Westminster Abbey, where the royalty and elite of London are buried beneath the floors of this stunning, ornate church.
Big Ben’s location on the Thames makes it perfect for those who want to explore the beautiful grounds by foot. This is especially true at night, when the Palace and surrounding grounds are lit with a golden hue. Big Ben is near several stops on the London Underground, so if you are visiting the area get off at the Westminster or St. James Park tube stations and follow the signs. Since there are so many sites in one area it is best to travel by foot, where the history of London can be absorbed at a leisurely pace.
