Much better than some of its reiews

I was doubtful about booking this hotel, due to some rather negative comments but I went ahead and it was fine. I needed an hotel close to Lime St Station and it certainty is. There is a sense of faded grandeur about it but for me it was convenient and had all I needed. I had a nice meal in the restaurant

The hotel is large and certainly old but it was perfect for my purposes and so close to the station.

Girlie getaway

Booked a 2 night getaway as a treat for my 15 year old daughter and myself. It felt so nice walking into such a grande building. Ok it is in need of a little TLC in places but taking into account the age of the building and the history within, I would not hesitate in going back again. We had a twin room on the 3rd floor, the room was huge and so comfortable, with a large bathroom both of which were spotless, again overlooking the small amount of TLC needed. My daughter commented how special and homely it felt. The staff could not be more helpful or informative. Its within walking distance of all the sights of the city and being able to use the facilities of the gym and pool...we had a brilliant time. The buffet breakfast filled us till our evening meal !! Very reasonable price.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

5 minutes walk from hotel is Bella Italia. A lovely Italian restaurant where we had only to wait about 15 mins for a table ( we hadnt booked ) Albert Dock is about 15 - 20 mins walk depending on wether you cut through Liverpool 1 shopping mall or not. Within the Dock are all manner of shops , coffee shops and galleries & museums. "Whats Cooking" does a great morning coffee offer....2 hot drinks & 2 cakes ( either a huge piece of Victoria Sandwich or a large scone with jam butter and cream ) for £5...before 11am.

Could be so good but needs work

Asked for a quiet non-smoking room but got a room stinking of smoke with a night club outside the window. Has a big history in Liverpool but needs major work to bring it up to the standards required today. has many bus tours but without these I guess they would be out of business. Rooms need upgrading. Lobby needs a new face. They should have a porter on the door to welcome guests and make them feel welcome. It would also stop the drug head I met in the toliets loading up on his fun! Budget hotel with such a big history and potential. I go to Liverpool regularly and normally stay elsewhere. My trend wont be changing based on this visit.

Grand Old Hotel

The Adelphi is clearly in need of a bit of updating but it still maintains a grand old character. Staff were friendly and rooms comfortable and clean. The restaurant was ok with an all you can eat carvery.

Savour that Fawlty Towers experience!

I know from experience that any stay with Brittannia Hotels is sure to test even the most undemanding of travellers. I went expecting a Fawlty Towers experience, and the Adelphi did not disappoint. From a 20-minute wait to check-in to finding that the room had one pane of double glazing missing, we got off to a promising start. We quickly realised that the lifts are best used for up-travel only, as, even from the fifth floor, it was quicker to use the stairs. The hotel rooms contain genuine antiques: cathode-ray-tube televisions! Some of the channels even worked. Interestingly, an overflow pipe from a floor above emptied directly into our bath. Lovely! Not all rooms have Do Not Disturb signs, so guests play the fun game of nicking each other's during the night. Don't worry though, because the maids know to ignore them. Speaking to a fellow guest -- those long waits for the lifts do encourage social interaction and bonding -- she told me that her maid burst in at 8am to "check she was up". How thoughtful! I looked for the rat called Basil scuttling across the dining room floor, but sadly there wasn't one. Ah still, for a bargain £35, you can't have everything.

unhelpful staff, sub-standard hotel

The room was a twin rather than double, and was not worth the price. The hotel was noisy, being full of drunken guests who kept us up all night. When we complained to the manager, they dismissed our complaint and refused to offer any recompense. I would definitely not stay here again.
