Basic, great location

A basic hotel. Be sure to get a room in the old part of the hotel. We were first put in a broom close of a room that had nothing to recommend it, but when we were asked for another, the staff kindly put us in a room in the older part which was far superior. Good location, across the street from the modern art museum, a few blocks from the center of new town.

Disappointed

It looked shabby on the outside but my hopes were lifted by the entrance area, restaurant and bar, as they looked smart and clean. Booking in was anxiety ridden, as the person checking us in insisted we had not paid in advance when he conceded no apology was forthcoming. The room was grubby, obviously not well cleaned, we found boxer shorts on the bathroom floor and there was mould all around the shower area. We had no towels so took the boxers to reception and asked for towels, no apology and no towels until the following morning. When the room was cleaned the mugs were left dirty and no replacement teabags or milk. When we returned to our room on day 2 the key card did not work, they had checked us out. The electric sockets were loose and only worked intermittently, the hairdryer burnt my daughters hair. When we checked out the person manning reception said we had not paid and asked to make a payment when I protested they said we did not owe anything. No apology and thank you or any pleasantries at all.

The Staff helped

The start of our experience was not good, we waited 2hours to get our room. We was told 10 minutes by reception, after 40 mins had gone by I asked reception about the room, to be told a few more minutes. Not once were we spoken to whilst waiting at the bar, this is definitely not acceptable and no business thrives on this kind of Amatuerism. I will say that the Asst Manager totally redeemed the Hotel and the situation. Also I would like to commend the two young lads doing the Night Shift. Excellent lads and Hard working, this was on what I had seen myself. They were also helpful to the core and I hope this gets mentioned, as that's what young people need, in going forward in their Vocation. Thanks

Unexpected disappointment

Check in was good, carpet dirty, room dusty, complained to housekeeping who hoover again when asked but still dirty and complained at reception but nothing happened. You could write in the dust. There was upgrading work going on in the hotel but that does not account for the mess. I have emailed the manager and still no response. This hotel had a good location and could be so much better with improved house keeping. The bar area was poor and dining area looked like a school canteen. Sheets and towels clean which was positive. Edinburgh itself was fantastic but the weekend was tarnished by the hotel.

Awful

Room was disgusting! Shower had been ripped off wall, stains all over the carpet, holes in the wall. The room was completely bare. It is clearly a 'party' hotel. There was a group of drink men being loud and roudy in the corridor, preventing me from getting to sleep and they woke me up at 5:30am. Staff seemed uninterested to deal with this! For the amount that was paid I was extremely disappointed - I have stayed in nicer places for a lot less!

Need to get their act together

Booked 2 night Bed and breakfast. Was charged again on arrival ( refunded the next morning when I complained) No record of breakfast having been paid for so charged again on first morning. Should have saved our money as £15 for 2 for below average food and awful coffee. Pillows are dreadful - woke with with very poorly neck first morning. How much a half decent pillow cost? Come on PEOPLE!! sort this our. Staff were fairly glum in all departments! Room was extremely hot with no way of improving ventilation as window will only open very slightly ( health and safety I guess!) so all in all will NOT be staying here EVER again.

Didn't even leave down to my expectations.

The room was smelling. The bed was not comfortable. There was no hot water. You can't get anything(toothpaste etc) from the reception. The wireless internet DOES NOT ACTUALLY EXIST! It very rarely connects and is always extremely slow. The whole building is not very well decorated. Overall, not recommended. Book in advance and find better deals at other better hotels.

Not a good stay

The hotel is the worst hotel I've ever stayed in I've stayed in better hostels. The room was dirty it looked like the carpets had not been clean in years. The shower system what a joke that was. The bed was very uncomfortable not a good night's sleep at all, then first thing in the morning builders started hammering downstairs. I can go on with listing why not to stay there but I'll stop now. The place should shut and do a massive revamp.

Run Down

Nice pleasant and helpful greeting by reception. The room itself was in need of a complete refurbishment. Tiles falling off bathroom wall, no toilet roll holder (broken) Bin lid broken, Jug lid broken. Mould on bottom of shower curtain. Carpet pulling away from wall. Damp smell as entered room. Staff are friendly and helpful and appear to be doing all they can but are fighting a losing battle with a building in desperate need of refurbishment. Hotel is in a good position, only saving grace.
