West Pilton

The West Pilton neighbourhood of Edinburgh, Scotland is part of the massive regeneration project going on in the city centre that aims to turn formerly impoverished areas into thriving suburbs. West Pilton has long been considered one of the poorest parts of Edinburgh, with the skyline dominated by tenement housing and council estates. Now many of these are being torn down and replaced with more modern housing aimed at young professionals that work Downtown, to the southeast. This progress has brought the standard improvements in restaurants and shopping that add to the neighbourhood’s blend of old and new.

Take a stroll around the Granton Harbour in West Pilton and you can see the Edinburgh regeneration project in action, as this former fishing village is being transformed by restaurants and yacht clubs.
  • Explore West Pilton Park while in Edinburgh and you will find a relaxing green space with plenty of areas for hiking as well as a pitch for football.
  • Get a real taste of Edinburgh with a frosty pint at one of the many ancient pubs lining Ferry Road in West Pilton, a great place to experience the real pub culture of the city.

Edinburgh is a fairly compact city, which makes it easy to get around using public transportation, bicycle or even on foot. You can catch several tram lines that pass through West Pilton from the Edinburgh city centre. Tram is the preferred method of transport for locals, as it is inexpensive and allows for more freedom. Cycling is also immensely popular in Edinburgh and there are plenty of dedicated riding paths that snake through the city into West Pilton. This is a great way to get around, as it will allow you to get a close-up look at the architecture.
