Underground City hotels
The Underground City in Edinburgh has received a dark reputation over the years and many visitors flock to the area to hear ghost stories, legends, and other tales about the history of the area. The “city” is actually made up of tunnels that were created by the construction of the South Bridge in the late 1700s. Originally the home of tradesmen, the tunnels fell into disrepair over time and were later shut down. During an extensive excavation in 1994, the Underground City was reopened and tourists often attend walking tours and events in this sprawling space under the town.
- Book an after dark walking tour inside the Underground City in Edinburgh, where you’ll hear about the unsavoury past of the tunnels such as the criminals who hid underground in the abandoned city.
- Attend a costumed tour through the tunnels of the Underground City to learn about the city’s rich history, including the trial of Mary Queen of Scots.
- Visit the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which is held in the vaults each summer, to hear live music performed in the subterranean tunnels.
Arriving in Edinburgh by air is quite simple. Most visitors fly into Edinburgh International Airport, which is located just outside the city centre, and then take the Airlink Express to the downtown section. The public Lothian Bus system also travels from the airport to the city at regular times each day. Those who arrive by rail can take the train directly to Waverley Station and then walk a few minutes to the Underground City. Reaching the Underground City is also easy by car. Tourists can park just outside the vaults on Blair Street.
