Swanston is a small village in Edinburgh, Scotland that is situated about eight kilometres from the city centre. There is evidence that there were farms in this area as early as the 9th century, but popular opinion is that the town has been inhabited since at least the 13th century. This long and rich history is evidenced in several ancient structures that still dapple the countryside around Swanston. What the small town is mostly known for is its multitude of outdoor activities, as there are several golf courses and an artificial ski slope that draw visitors from far and wide.
- Hit the slopes at the Hillend Ski Centre in Swanston and you can glide down manmade hills that offer the only real skiing opportunity near the city.
- Play a round at the Swanston Golf Course and you can watch your ball sail into a horizon of never-ending green on this challenging and well-maintained course just outside of Edinburgh.
- Go paragliding from the Pentland Hills and you can soar over the verdant beauty of Edinburgh before landing safely in a soft field in Swanston.
Swanston is very near the Edinburgh City Bypass, so you can get there easily by private car or public transportation. The easiest way to get there is to take a bus or tram from the Edinburgh city centre directly to Swanston. There are several routes to choose from, so you should not have a problem finding service. Once there the town is small enough to get around on foot or bicycle and there are plenty of dedicated trails that snake through the village. The amazing green scenery of the region is best explored in this manner.
