Stirling Castle

Experience the art, culture, and celebrity of the 16th century at Stirling Castle, the ultimate royal fortress in Edinburgh, Scotland. Located on a rocky volcanic tor that overlooks its surrounds, Stirling Castle lets visitor imaginations run wild through displays of authentic tapestries, lively Renaissance revelries, and programmes focusing on the Scottish language. As the favoured residents for Scotland’s kings and queens, including the Stuarts, the castle is home to much of the country’s heritage. Wander the gardens, see preparations for a medieval feast, and imagine yourself as a guest in the Great Hall where knowledgeable guides make history come alive.

  • Jump straight into Renaissance life with a visit to Argyll Lodging, a complete representation of an Edinburgh townhouse with an impressive fireplace, recreated tapestries, and an elaborate chair-of-state.
  • Learn about Stirling Castle’s place in Edinburgh’s history in the Castle Exhibition, which traces events such as the wars of independence, royal castle burials, castle artists, and the lives of James IV and James V.
  • Step back in time to the palace kitchens where you will be treated to the sights and smells of authentic royal food preparation along with the brewing of ale.

Travel the M9 to get to Stirling Castle, as this historic site is located in the Scottish Highlands approximately 56 kilometres northwest of Edinburgh. The castle is 45 kilometres east of Glasgow via the M80. Travel times from both cities are approximately 30 minutes. A car park is available on the castle esplanade and includes disabled access. Bus tours to Stirling Castle are available from Edinburgh through a variety of tour operators. ScotRail provides service to the town of Stirling and visitors can take a shuttle bus during the summer from the Castleview Park and Ride facility to the castle.
