Stenhouse is a suburb of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland. Located west and just a few short kilometres from downtown it is a popular residential location for city workers, and is also a good base for touring the city and its surrounds. While largely residential it does incorporate an Air Training Corps base - the 287th Squadron. A local attraction worth seeing is Stenhouse Mansion, built in the early 16th century by the Stenhope family. It has been nearly lost due to neglect on several occasions, and now belongs to the National Trust for Scotland.
- Go into Edinburgh to the Old Town area and tour Edinburgh Castle, a one thousand year old medieval fortress on the highest point of the city, and the site of the famous Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
- Join a night-time Ghost Tour to get a very different perspective on historical Edinburgh by visiting the reputedly haunted Underground Vaults of the city.
- Catch a bus from Stenhouse into the Old Town area and visit the Abbey and Palace of Holyroodhouse, still used by the Royal Family, but open to the public when they are not in residence.
As the capital of Scotland, the city has excellent transport links. Its’ international airport receives a wide range of domestic and international flights from North America and Europe. Long distance trains from major Scottish cities and England frequent the city daily, as do buses via several motorways providing access to Edinburgh. The city can be difficult for driving and parking is difficult, so it may be best to use the public transport system. Public buses and trains will get you to most tourist attractions and suburbs, including Stenhouse, and a new tram service is currently under construction.
