Sighthill is a suburb located just west of the city centre of Edinburgh, Scotland. For years the suburb was known for its drab and towering blocks of residential housing but the area has recently undergone a regeneration that has mostly revolved around the two universities in the area. Sighthill’s skyline was once dominated by four massive blocks of residential towers but these were recently demolished as part of the regeneration project. Now this up and coming suburb features a number of green spaces and small, independently owned shops that sell a variety of interesting local wares.
- Climb to the top of the rolling green hills of Sighthill Park, where you will be afforded great views of the city of Edinburgh to the east.
- Stop in the quaint Sighthill Library and find some interesting books about the long and storied history of Edinburgh.
- Come face to face with interesting animals from around the world at the Edinburgh Zoo, located just a short distance from Sighthill and featuring the country’s largest collection of animals.
Sighthill is located outside of the city centre of Edinburgh and is easy to reach by public transportation or private car. The Edinburgh-Glasgow & Stirling railway line passes through Sighthill and has direct access to the city, as well as other major cities in Scotland. The Calder Road, one of the region’s main arteries, passes along Sighthill for those who choose hired or private cars. This roadway links to the M8 motorway that has links to the Edinburgh Airport. This suburb is becoming more pedestrian friendly and there are plans for a network of bike paths.
