Scottish Parliament hotels
With a design by the late Enric Miralles intended to portray the marriage of Scottish culture, natives, and countryside, the Scottish Parliament building is certainly a site to behold. Visitors to Edinburgh may enjoy the architecture of this impressively over-budget building that has been highly scrutinized. If the drama and architecture do not draw them to the Scottish Parliament, maybe learning about Scottish politics or history will. In spite of the £430M building cost, entrance to the complex, tours of the building and historical exhibits, and tickets to view Scottish Parliament members in debate or mid-meeting, are free.
- Enjoy a live debate by Parliament members on a free tour of the Scottish Parliament complex, in Edinburgh.
- View an 1815 copy of the Declaration of Arbroath, which documents Scotland’s independence from England; the Canongate Building, which displays cherished national literature; and other liberal arts and historical exhibits on display throughout the Scottish Parliament building.
- Attend the Festival of Politics, held each summer in Edinburgh at the Scottish Parliament building where visitors can enjoy a festive mixture of history, politics, and the arts, through exhibits, plays, and professional speakers.
The 1.6 hectare Scottish Parliament complex rests only one kilometre from downtown Edinburgh, near the oldest part of the city. Visitors can get there by walking to the foot of the Royal Mile. A train to Waverley station will drop visitors about a 15-minute walk from the Scottish Parliament buildings. Bicyclists will find bike racks nearby at Holyrood Lodge. The closest vehicle parking is several blocks away, with the few dedicated spots close by reserved for handicapped visitors. To get closer, take the Lothian Bus line 35 to Canongate or line 36 to Horse Wynd.
