Scott Monument hotels
One of the most memorable monuments in Edinburgh may be Scott Monument, a breathtaking Gothic tower designed as a memorial to the city's treasured novelist and poet, Sir Walter Scott, after he had passed away in 1832. The monument is displayed at Princes Street Gardens located in Old Town, near Holyrood Park. This is a fantastic area to visit in late December, when the Gardens are set up with the Winter Wonderland fair, complete with a giant Ferris wheel and an irresistible Christmas Market. Don't worry if you cannot make the fair, however, because this place is lovely year-round.
- Enjoy a stunning panoramic view of Edinburgh from the top of the Scott Monument, which soars majestically 61 metres above the Princes Street Mall. To take in the views, however, visitors will have to climb 287 steps.
- Stroll the historic and beautiful Princes Street Gardens and admire the park's many noteworthy statues like the sculptures of Sir Walter Scott and other famous countrymen like Adam Black, John Wilson and Allan Ramsey.
- Relax in The Meadows, a large public city park in Edinburgh, where you can stroll, people-watch, or enjoy a family picnic.
Edinburgh Airport is just eight kilometres from Scott Monument via the A8 Motorway, and depending on the time you travel, you can make this trip in a half-hour using the number 100 bus. You can also drive to the Scottish capital or arrive by ferry, coach bus, or train. A more luxurious method is to book a cruise and dock at Leith. Getting around this old city is easy and inexpensive with so many public transit options like the suburban rail, public buses, trams, and taxis. You can also easily explore the Scott Monument on foot or by bike.
