Saughton is a suburb of Edinburgh, Scotland that is situated in the western portion of the city. This quaint and peaceful suburb has a dubious reputation among Edinburgh locals, as it is mainly known for the HM Prison Edinburgh. The prison has been there since the early 20th century, so much of the suburb initially emerged as a result of its presence. Prior to that, Saughton was primarily a rural area, and it still retains that feel with its rolling hills and clean green spaces that draw visitors from all over.
- Take a stroll around Saughton Park, where you will find a wonderful network of trails to hike around on, as well as a massive skatepark, where the best skateboarders in Edinburgh can be found practicing their tricks.
- Go to the local sports complex and play games like squash, tennis and badminton, using the state of the art facilities that are among the best in all of Edinburgh.
- Explore the nearby Gorgie City Farm, and get to know the animals on a real working farm.
Edinburgh is an easy city to get around using public transportation, walking or even on a bicycle. The best way to get to Saughton is to take the Edinburgh rail and get off at the South Gyle or Edinburgh Park stations, both of which are within walking distance of the suburb. Cycling and walking are also popular ways to get around the city, and there are plenty of dedicated pedestrian and cycling paths that lead to Saughton. Cycling and walking also give visitors the chance to get a close up look at the historic architecture.
